The lego way: curve crossing diagrams as general models in physical organic chemistry
نویسنده
چکیده
The whole may be understood by its reconstruction from building block components: this is a LEG0 principle. A curve crossing diagram is a model for the reconstruction of energy profiles from Valence Bond (VB) building blocks, and may be considered as the quantum chemical analog of Robinson's curved arrow mnemonic. There are two archetypal diagrams which describe chemical transformations: (a) a twc-curve diagram in which the spine is the crossing of the two spin-paired covalent forms of the bonds which interchange during the transformation, and (b) a three-curve diagram in which the principal curves (in (a)) are horizontally crossed by an intermediate curve. The two archetypal diagrams constitute a unifying framework for conceptualization and prediction of reactivity patterns, reaction mechanisms and structural trends related to "hypervalency" and "hypercoordination". Examples are discussed.

The synthesis of self-assembled semiconductor nanocrystal (NC) superlattices using oriented attachment recently became a flourishing research topic. This technique already produced remarkable forms of NC superlattices, such as linear chains, mono and multilayer square lattices, and silicene-like honeycomb lattices. In the case of lead chalcogenide semiconductors where NCs are in the form of tru...

The interpretation of the ultrafast luminescence decay in [Re(Br(CO)3(N^N)] complexes as a new group of chromophoric imidazo[4,5-f]-1,10-phenanthroline ligands, including 1,2-dimethoxy benzene, tert-butyl benzene (L4) and 1,2,3-trimethoxy benzene, tert-butyl benzene (L6), was studied. Fac-[Re(Br(CO)3L4 and L6] with different aryl groups were calculated in singlet and triplet excited states. The...
متن کاملModels as Feedback: Developing Representational Competence in Chemistry
Spatial information in science is often expressed through representations such as diagrams and models. Learning the strengths and limitations of these representations and how to relate them are important aspects of developing scientific understanding, referred to as representational competence. Diagram translation is particularly challenging for students in organic chemistry, and although concr...
متن کاملA New Temperature Effect Model to Predict Benzoic Acid Isotherm Curves onto Activated Carbon
The recovery and removal of the most organic acids in liquid solutions is usually treated with fixed-bed adsorption processes. Among many adsorbents, Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) is used to remove organic pollutants such as Benzoic Acid (BA) from wastewaters conventionally. In this research, adsorption isotherm curves of BA onto GAC at varying temperatures 25-60 °C are developed and the ...
متن کاملHalf-Century Journey from Synthetic Organic Chemistry to Mathematical Stereochemistry through Chemoinformatics
My half-century journey started from synthetic organic chemistry. During the first stage of my journey, my interest in stereochemistry was initiated through the investigation on the participation of steric effects in reactive intermediates, cylophanes, strained heterocycles, and organic compounds for photography. In chemoinformatics as the next stage of the journey, I proposed the concept of im...
